10 spooky homemade Halloween treats you can make for your pup

These spooky snacks are nutritious and will keep your dog out of the candy bowl.

No one likes to be left out on Halloween, and that includes your pooch. Between all the people at the door and the mom dressing up in weird clothes, it’s always an exciting night for your dog.

When it comes to lick or treats, your dog shouldn’t be eating the candy kids get, especially chocolate (see our list of harmful foods for dogs here). But that doesn’t mean your pup should miss out on the fun.

DIY Halloween treats are worth the effort: you know exactly what healthy ingredients are inside, and you can custom-make the treats the size you like. Here are 10 ghoulish goodies you can try:

1. Banana Ghosts

  • Bananas

  • ½ cup carob powder

  • 1 ¼ cup goat milk

  • 1 tsp honey

  • Ice cream sticks

Cut the bananas in half and insert a stick in each wide half. Dip in the whisked mixture of carob, milk, and honey. Refrigerate for a couple of hours.

2. Canine Candy Corn

  • Halloween ice cube mold

  • Mashed bananas

  • Pumpkin puree

  • Plain non-fat yogurt

Layer all the ingredients in equal parts to resemble a candy corn. Freeze and serve.

3. Creepy Coconut Balls

  • ⅓ cup coconut oil

  • 2-3 tbsp peanut butter

  • 2 ½ cups rolled oats

  • ⅓ cup shredded coconut

In a food processor, mix peanut butter, oil, and oats. Roll into bite-sized balls and toss in the coconut. Refrigerate on a lined baking sheet for 30 minutes.

4. Pumpkin FroYo Bites

  • 1 cup non-fat plain frozen yogurt

  • ½ cup canned pure pumpkin

  • ¼ cup water

Mix all ingredients and pour into a (pumpkin-shaped) ice cube tray. Freeze for 3-4 hours.

5. Peanut Butter Party Biscuits

  • 1 cup peanut butter

  • 1 egg

  • ¼ cup honey

  • 1 cup old fashioned oats

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour

  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil

  • ⅓ cup water

Beat all ingredients until a stiff dough forms. Form biscuits with a (bone shaped) cookie cutter and bake at 375 degrees on a parchment-lined sheet for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through. Cool on a wire rack and serve.

  • 2 tbsp pumpkin powder

  • 6 oz warm water

  • 1 oz frothed milk or coconut milk

Mix water and pumpkin powder well. Top with frothed milk.

  • 1 cup plain non-fat yogurt

  • 1-2 cups kale leaves

  • ⅓ cup blueberries

Blend together half the yogurt with the kale, and half the yogurt with the blueberries. Freeze into separate skull and crossbone molds.

Cupcake

  • ½ cup whole wheat flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • ⅓ cup canola oil

  • ½ cup apple sauce

  • 1 egg

  • ½ container plain yogurt

  • 1 tbsp honey

  • 2 tbsp peanut butter

  • 2 oz cream cheese

  • 4 tbsp canned pumpkin

  • 2 tbsp honey

  • 2 tbsp yogurt

  • 1 tbsp flour (to thicken)

Mix all cake ingredients in a bowl and scoop into a mini-cupcake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Mix frosting ingredients and top cupcakes when cool.

9. Skeleton Bones

Bones

  • 2 ½ cups non-bleached flour

  • 1 egg

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 chicken bouillon cube

Icing

  • 1 cup non-fat plain yogurt

  • ½ cup water

Mix together bone ingredients until it forms a dough. Press into a bone-shaped cookie tin and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Mix icing ingredients and glaze over bones when cool. Freeze for about an hour.

10. Bacon Donuts of Darkness

Donuts

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1 cup oats

  • ⅓ cup coconut oil

  • ½ cup peanut butter

  • 2 eggs

Topping

  • Greek yogurt

  • Bacon bits

Mix all donut ingredients until a dough forms. Shape into an oiled donut pan and bake at 375 degrees for 14 minutes. Allow to cool then top with yogurt and bacon bits. Freeze until topping hardens.
